| Brockmann’s Commitment to Fair Trade: Our Chocolate is Ethically Traded |
||
We are proud to offer products made from ethically traded cocoa and supporting the international fair trade movement. Schokinag, our main supplier has started a concept which is called ethically traded cocoa for the production of their chocolate years ago. What does Schokinag mean by ethically traded cocoa? “1) In the context of our raw material sourcing in West Africa we have organized a strong strategic alliance with Nigeria. The Nigerian produce is marketed/exported on a free market regime. As is to be expected the forces of a free market allocate all resources in an optimal fashion compared to any other regime especially monopolized regimes. The farm gate prices expressed in British Pounds per ton in Nigeria are the highest. This means when we buy their produce we make sure that the individual farmer gets the highest percentage of the world market price. It also means, if we support this origin we do indeed support the respective farmers in a most ethical way. This short explanation is the most important foundation for ethical trading in general. 2) Furthermore by sourcing directly in that country we positively influence local trading practices, ie. many an intermediary and trader is known to fairly regularly circumvent his contractual obligation whenever it is favourable for him. In contrast to this deplorable trading practice up-country we have not only established a good name by keeping our commitments but we have indeed highlighted what ethically traded means on a farm level. 3) Furthermore we have financially sponsored rural infrastructure upcountry in Nigeria by donating pumps on wellhead so that several villages now have access to safe and clean drinking water by our assistance. 4) Furthermore we have donated to various villages and their primary schools, school benches, black boards, note books and school books so that the children of those villages don’t have to sit on the floor anymore when they come to school they can learn with proper books and utensils etc. 5) Our latest initiative in this context took place in Nigeria once more: together with our strategic alliance partner we embarked on a long-term project to grow Organic Cocoa Beans. This grass roots approach, was started in 2007 and has led to the certification of some 600 farmers by IMO, the leading Swiss organization.” –Schokinag, 2008 |
